Definition and Usage:
Hydrochloric acid is a chemical compound composed of hydrogen and chlorine elements, commonly known as hydrochloric acid. It is gaseous under normal pressure and at room temperature. Today, it is used in all areas from the iron and steel sector to the PVC sector, organic material production and the food sector. In addition to these conveniences, hydrochloric acid actually has a toxic content. It causes damage to many surfaces, including the human body. When handling this acid, great care should be taken and the necessary precautions should be taken. It has both a toxic effect and an irritating effect. It causes burns on the skin and irritation in the respiratory system. In order to obtain hydrochloric acid, hydrogen gas must first be obtained. Hydrogen chloride normally boils at 110 degrees and melts at -27 to 32 degrees.
Hydrochloric acid is a compound consisting of a chlorine atom and a hydrogen atom, shown with the formula HCI. This compound dissolves in a liter of water at room temperature at an average rate of 450 liters. Like other acids, it gives a color called acid color. It has a high effect on bases such as ammonia and sodium carbonate. If hydrochloric acid is dropped into water, it gives H+ ion. It releases hydrogen as it affects metals such as iron, zinc, aluminum, magnesium. Although it reacts with oxygen in the air together with copper, hydrogen is not released here. Hydrochloric acid also has a rust-removing effect. When carbonates react with this compound, carbon dioxide is released. When it interacts with organic compounds, chlorinated products can be obtained.
Areas of Use
- This compound is an inorganic acid used in different areas. The concentration of the acid varies depending on the area of use. It is used in many areas such as pickling of steel, production of inorganic substances, creation of organic compounds, and provision of pH balance. It is used in the industry in areas such as petroleum, resin regeneration, paper, medicine, paint, chemistry, textile, and metal chloride production.
- Pickling of steel: Hydrochloric acid is frequently used in the pickling process for cleaning steel. First, the rust on the iron is removed with 18% hydrochloric acid. Then the pickling process is carried out.
- Obtaining organic compounds: Hydrochloric acid is used in the production of organic substances such as Vinyl chloride, which is produced for PVC. In this area, organic compounds such as activated carbon, ascornic acid, bisphenol A, polycarbonates can be obtained. Phosgene obtained from hydrochloric acid is an organic substance used as a chemical weapon in World War I.
- Production of inorganic compounds: Most inorganic compounds are produced by acid-base reactions. Hydrochloric acid, one of the acids in these, has a very important place. Substances such as iron chloride are separated from water by this effect, and wastewater in water treatment plants is cleaned. In addition, hydrochloric acid is used in the production of materials such as batteries.
- Providing pH control: Hydrochloric acid is used to reduce the basic value in any solution. With this, the acid-base values in the solution can be changed. The pH values in pool water, drinking water, food and medicines are controlled in this way.
- Restoration of ion exchange: High-quality hydrochloric acid is used to control and restore ion exchange. Substances such as resin can be manipulated in this way.
- Other areas of use: Hydrochloric acid, one of the most important substances in the chemical industry, is a material used in many branches of industry. It is also used in household cleaning, leatherworking, and the construction industry. Hydrochloric acid injected into rocks is used in oil exploration. It is also used in the food industry to make additives.
