Definition and Areas of Use:

Sodium bicarbonate is a chemical compound with the chemical formula NaHCO3. It is one of the sodium salts. It has an anti-acid property. It is also used as baking powder. It is soluble in water. It is a white solid crystalline powder. It has a slightly alkaline taste reminiscent of sodium carbonate. Baking powder used to leaven dough is usually a combination of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), dry acid (H+) and corn starch. Sodium bicarbonate is commonly known as baking soda. In the following text, the word baking soda will be used instead of sodium bicarbonate. Under the influence of temperature (50 °C and above), water (H2O) and acid, the baking soda in the baking powder is separated into several components. During this process, carbon dioxide (CO2) gas is released, gas bubbles are formed and thus the dough expands.

The chemical reaction is:NaHCO3 + H+ ———> Na+ + CO2 + H2

Baking soda does not only leaven dough; it can also easily clean burnt pots, burnt baking sheets, etc.: For example, fill the pot with water to a thickness of one finger; add a packet of baking powder (or baking soda) and boil for 10 minutes. Burnt food residue will dissolve immediately. Stains on teapots, thermoses and flower vases can be easily removed with a mixture of boiled water and baking soda.

In boiling water, carbonate loses half of its CO2 and forms soda (Na2CO3):

2NaHCO3 + heat ———> Na2CO3 + H2O + CO2

The soda formed reacts with water to form sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Thus, the solution becomes more basic and its detergent properties increase.

Na2CO3 + H2O ———> NaHCO3 + NaOH

If you brush your teeth with baking soda (or baking soda) once a week, your teeth will become whiter. The important thing to note here is not to consume acidic foods and drinks for half an hour after brushing. Baking soda reacts with calcium (Ca2+) and magnesium (Mg2+) ions, which cause hardness in water, and forms a precipitate, softening the water.

When boiling legumes and hard vegetables, adding baking soda to the boiling water will soften them faster. The basic feature of baking soda helps cellulose swell. Thanks to its basic feature, baking soda eliminates unpleasant odors. For example, bad breath, wastewater flow points in sinks and toilets, smelly shoes, refrigerators, etc. Because baking soda has the ability to bind odors to itself. Vegetables such as cabbage and cauliflower are rich in sulfur. This sulfur dissolves when such vegetables are boiled and causes an unpleasant odor. Adding a little baking soda to the boiling water while boiling such vegetables reduces the formation of unwanted odors. In an alkaline environment, the oxygen in the air oxidizes these sulfur compounds. At the same time, baking soda reduces the gas-forming feature of such vegetables. It is used instead of deodorant and in foot baths for sweaty feet. This application should be done at most once a week. If a dressing is applied to the area with baking soda after an insect bite, it immediately reduces itching and swelling. In general, a mixture made with a spoon of baking soda in half a liter of water is good for itching. Baking soda is also good for sunburned areas, it has an instant pain-relieving effect. Baking soda is also used for heartburn. Heartburn is caused by the stomach secreting too much stomach acid.

Areas of Use

  • Sodium bicarbonate is commonly used as baking powder because it is commonly known among the public as baking powder. However, it is also a good solution for cleaning burnt trays and pots easily.
  • It is also used to clean residues inside teapots, thermoses and vases. It is also very easy to apply. The container to be applied is filled with hot water and sodium bicarbonate is poured into it. Stains are easily cleaned with this mixture.
  • When the soda form of sodium bicarbonate reacts with water, it becomes basic and acts as a detergent.
  • Sodium bicarbonate can also be used to boil dried legumes better. When some sodium bicarbonate is added to the boiling water, the legumes soften more quickly.
  • It can also be a solution for those with bad breath. This substance, which prevents unwanted odors, can also be used to prevent sink odors, eliminate shoe odors, and eliminate refrigerator odors.
  • Sodium bicarbonate can be added to the boiling water to eliminate odors that occur when boiling vegetables such as cabbage and cauliflower.
  • After insect bites, applying sodium bicarbonate water to the area where the insect bite is located prevents itching in the bitten area.
  • If those who have problems with sweating hands and feet use sodium bicarbonate water instead of deodorant, the sweating problem in these areas will decrease and bad odors will be prevented.
  • In case of sunburn, if sodium bicarbonate water is applied to the burned area immediately, it relieves the pain in the burned area.
